Description
This unique interprofessional course uses a combination of simulator based training techniques coupled with small group learning to improve the management of medical and surgical emergencies. We focus on participants’ awareness of crucial Human factors (Leadership, Teamwork, Communication and Critical Decision Making) to improve the quality of team-based clinical care. Our individual course design allows all staff (nurses, interns and RMO/ Registrars) to work together in teams, mirroring their clinical environment.
The course uses advanced simulators to recreate emergencies that present to the Acute Medical Unit (AMU), Acute Surgical Unit (ASU), Emergency Department (ED) or on Medical Emergency Team (MET) calls.
Teams will have to assess the patient, recognise the cause for deterioration and work together to stabilise the patient. We use advanced debriefing techniques including video, to create a fun, safe and supportive learning environment. We will also incorporate SA Health’s objectives in improving patient safety and quality.
The teams are made up of 10 participants: 2 RMO/Registrars, 2 Interns and 6 nurses. It is important you pick the correct ticket type for this reason.
Participants: This would be suitable for nurses and doctors of all levels working in ED, IMS, Surgical and Medical specialties and Doctors. Teams will be kept small to mimic clinical working environments and allow individual learning.
Topics include:
- Common Medical and Surgical Emergencies seen in the ED, AMU, ASU and on MET
- Human Factors – Communication, teamwork and Leadership
- Exploration of critical decision making
- Recognition of deteriorating patient
- Common emergency drugs and infusions
